With immense pride,

I congratulate the “golden” batch of graduates – the Class of 2022 for a job well done! Making it to your graduation amidst the pandemic is a milestone we are all happy about.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Past, Igniting Our Future,” is apt as we recently commemorated the 50th Founding Anniversary of UMak. Looking back, 50 years ago, that is, between 1972 to 2022, there were vast challenges and changes from then Makati Polytechnic Community College (MPCC) to the University of Makati. We gladly remember the humble beginnings of our cherished educational institution, popularly known as MPCC, a four-story building along Buendia Avenue, now known as Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue. This building housed three institutes, Technical High School, and administrative offices. It was small. We also call to mind and recognize the past presidents and the many individuals who dedicated their lives, talents, time, and effort to transform our students’ lives through this educational institution. These individuals, I believe, are somehow instrumental to UMak’s stature to where it is now. Indeed, celebrating the precious past and its lessons should be taken to heart. The willingness to innovate, and be agile and resilient are the best means to chart the path forward in igniting the future.

As young graduates, look to the future with great enthusiasm. The good thing about the future is that it can be created. Thus, your future is in your hands. Everything you do today will define your future. I then urge you to think of the so-called 4Ps- possible, plausible, probable, and preferred futures as you visualize yourselves, perhaps ten years from now. Work on that preferred future and let it motivate you until its fulfillment. Inevitably, there will be ups and downs but do not give up. Persevere. We have prepared you long enough to be prepared and resilient. Finally, never forget to return to your Alma Mater and share your life stories with us. Remember, your success is ours too.

I wish you all the best, dear graduates. Good luck! May you contribute to nation building towards the fulfillment of Maginhawa, Matatag at Panatag na Buhay!
